Sports & the outdoors
Fort Myers is a good base to watch a number of professional sports played at the highest level.

For baseball lovers, both the Boston Redsox & Minnesota Twins have Spring Training in the town, and play a number of warm up games in March & April.  Hammond Stadium is just 5 minutes from the house (Twins), and the Redsox are in a new stadium out by the airport.

We go the Sony Ericsson Open tennis at Miami every year if we can – it’s a great tournament and easy to get tickets.

Ice hockey is at Germain Arena, and the local team is the Florida Everblades.

Arcadia is the home of the rodeo in Florida, with real live cowboys in action.

And if you want to see football (US style), you can choose between Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers

If you want to take part rather than watch, the big outdoor activities locally are fishing, boating and golfing. There are organised boat trips to many of the islands as well as to more distant places like Key West.  There are also many businesses who hire boats of all kinds, with or without crew and fishing gear.  So you can go off on your own, or have your own captain to take you where you please.  You’ll find leaflets in the house for many of them, or just head off towards the beaches & you’ll find them alongside the roads.

We’re not golfers ourselves, but we have many guests who are and who say this is a great area.  Look at our golf page to learn more.

Fort Myers Beach is the liveliest beach locally, and has all kinds of beach-based activities:  volleyball, parasailing, windsurfing, you can hire a kayak, a bike, a boat, a Harley Davidson, visit a floating casino, and lots, lots more.

Lakes Park is a short drive / bike ride from the house and is our recommendation for walking, running or biking.  It has a 2.5mile paved trail, and bikes for rent.  There are also fresh water lakes, fishing for bass and catfish, and canoeing and water biking.

Bikes are available for hire just about anywhere you go - Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach and elsewhere.

And finally, if you want to use this holiday to get or stay fit, we use Planet Fitness on Gladiolus at the junction with McGregor.  They do delas by teh day, week & month.  It's friendly, very well equipped and, in our experience, rarely very busy.
